Sunset at the Palms is a smaller and quieter resort than many in Negril, with 65 rooms scattered around the lush tropical gardens in stilted cabins.

Each guest room has a private deck with a relaxing daybed and teak dining set beneath paddle-style ceiling fans. Dark wood floors and tapestry throws add to the simple décor.

Slate tile bathrooms include vertical showerheads and slate benches for cooling off.

Known for its good food and calm atmosphere, the resort has a free-form pool, a spa and watersports equipment, although some facilities are across the road at the hotel’s private beach area. The Sunset at the Palms is cited for its green practices and environmentally sustainable tourism policy.

Travelers disliked:

• The beach is located across the street – but there is a guard to stop the traffic!

• The noisy frogs and crickets at times.

• The live entertainment often stopped around 10pm. There was no disco and the only thing to do was sit at the bar and socialize with other guests.

• There was WiFi internet access in the lobby but not in the individual rooms.

• The resort is a little way out of the main resort area and taxis could be expensive.

• The bars lacked branded spirits, but the bartenders made up for it with their amazing concoctions!

Tips for Staying at the Sunset at the Palms:

• The private beach belonging to the resort has fine sand in the centre of Bloody Bay which is generally calm and ideal for all types of non-motorized watersports.

• Sunsets at Rick’s Café above Negril Beach are legendary. Sip cocktails and watch locals dive off the 50 foot high cliffs or enjoy the local reggae music.

• Take a guided walk around the resort grounds with the head gardener and learn the names of the exotic tropical flowers.

• Spa treatments, motorized sports and lobster dinner specials are all provided for an additional surcharge, but make the vacation extra special.

• The best months to visit are between November and April, but Jamaica vacation packages can also take advantage of the warm temperatures during the rainy season when heavy afternoon showers soon pass.

Recommendation:

Don’t be put off by the 3 ½ star rating. This is a lovely resort with high standards of food and service.

As far as Jamaica all inclusive vacation packages go, the Sunset at the Palms is ideal for couples and small groups. It is not the best choice for children or young adults looking for some wild parties.
